Unending frustration with the anonymous style required in academic documents

For the work I have been doing this year for the American Red Cross, I enjoyed being encouraged to write in the first person, using a direct style and avoiding the passive. It is very frustrating to get back to my PhD and to have to jump through hoops to do the opposite. It is nothing but a fiction to claim that the work I am describing had nothing to do with me. It forces me to use a convoluted writing style which is just harder to read. Which is better: in this paper I will argue” or in this paper it will be argued”? Who is doing the arguing, God?
When oh when will this medieval requirement for academic work be dropped for good?
